"Recycled" is on a lot of bedding labels these days. But not all recycled fills are the same — and if you're trying to make a genuinely sustainable choice, the difference matters.
Most "eco-friendly" Duvets on the market are filled with Recycled Polyester, a fibre made from melted-down plastic bottles. A much smaller number are filled with Recycled Down — real Down, reclaimed from existing down products, then washed, sterilized, and given a second life.
Both keep material out of landfills. Only one of them is natural, breathable, and biodegradable.
Here's how they actually compare — so you can decide what "sustainable" means for your sleep.
What Is Recycled Polyester?
Recycled Polyester (often labelled rPET) starts as post-consumer plastic — usually water bottles. The plastic is cleaned, shredded, melted, and spun into fine synthetic fibres that mimic the loft of Down.
To its credit, Recycled Polyester diverts plastic from landfills and uses less energy than producing virgin polyester. That's a real benefit, and it's why you'll see it everywhere from jackets to duvets.
But Recycled Polyester is still polyester. It's still plastic. That means:
- It sheds microplastics with washing and wear, which end up in waterways.
- It will never biodegrade. At the end of its life, it goes back to landfill as plastic.
- It traps heat. Synthetic fibres don't breathe or manage moisture the way natural fills do, which is why polyester duvets tend to sleep warmer and clammier.
- It flattens faster. Synthetic fill loses loft with use and washing, so the duvet's lifespan is shorter — which means replacing it sooner.
Recycling plastic into bedding is better than making new plastic. But the end product is still a plastic duvet.
What Is Recycled Down?
Recycled Down takes a different path. Instead of transforming plastic into fibre, it gives an already-perfect natural material another life.
Down is reclaimed from existing Down products — duvets, pillows, and garments that have reached the end of their use. The Down is then carefully sorted, washed, and sterilized to meet the same strict international cleanliness and hygiene standards as new down. It's tested and graded in certified Down-and-Feather laboratories, exactly the way virgin down is.
The result performs like new down, because it essentially is down — nature's best insulator, restored:
- Naturally insulating. Down clusters trap air, giving warmth without weight. Our recycled European down is graded at a lofty 650 fill power — the same measurement standard used for new down.
- Breathable. Down manages moisture and temperature naturally, keeping you warm in winter and comfortable in summer.
- Biodegradable. At the true end of its life, down returns safely to the earth. No microplastics. No landfill plastic.
- Long-lasting. A well-cared-for down duvet can last decades — the most sustainable product is often the one you don't have to replace.
In the industry, recycled fills like this are governed by standards such as the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), which verifies recycled content and responsible production. Recycled down remains rare in Canadian bedding — most brands offering "recycled" duvets are offering recycled plastic.
The Honest Comparison
| Recycled Polyester | Recycled Down | |
|---|---|---|
| Source material | Plastic bottles | Reclaimed natural Down |
| Breathability | Low — traps heat and moisture | High — naturally temperature-regulating |
| Warmth-to-weight | Heavier fill needed for warmth | Light and lofty (650+ fill power) |
| Microplastics | Yes, sheds over time | None |
| Biodegradable | No — plastic forever | Yes — fully natural |
| Lifespan | Years | Decades, with proper care |
| End of life | Landfill | Returns to the earth |
Recycled Polyester is a better plastic. Recycled Down is a better duvet.
How We Make Ours
Every recycled European down duvet we make is filled and finished in our 60,000-square-foot East York facility in Toronto, where we've been crafting down bedding since 1994 — and where we've been a board member of the Down Association of Canada since 1995. Working with down isn't something we added when sustainability became popular. It's all we've ever done.
The Recycled Down we use is 100% hypoallergenic, sterilized to international standards, and certified. Our RDS, certified by IDFL (TE-99972106), which certifies and tracks down from the source to the final product. The DOWNMARK® Certified — verifies the authenticity and quality of the down and feather filling. And lastly, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 — independently tested for harmful substances to help ensure product safety.
Because the Down is processed and graded the same way as new Down, you give up nothing in comfort. You simply sleep under a material that already existed — no new plastic made, no new Down produced.
We offer two ways to sleep on it:
Yorklinen Recycled European Down Duvet — From Yorklinen, the sustainable bedding brand we launched in 2020 to put three decades of Down expertise to work for eco-conscious sleep. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Recycled Down clean and hygienic?
Yes. Recycled Down is washed and sterilized to meet the same strict international standards of cleanliness as new down, and it's tested in certified down-and-feather laboratories. Our Recycled Down Duvets are hypoallergenic and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, which means they've been independently tested for harmful substances.
Does recycled down feel different from new down?
No. Because the Down is carefully sorted, cleaned, and graded by fill power just like virgin down, it delivers the same loft, warmth, and softness. Our Recycled European Down is graded at 650 fill power.
Is Recycled Down warmer than Recycled Polyester?
For the same weight, yes. Down's three-dimensional clusters trap more air than synthetic fibres, so a down duvet gives you more warmth with less weight — and breathes better while doing it.
Why is Recycled Down harder to find than Recycled Polyester?
Reclaiming, sorting, sterilizing, and re-grading natural down is a far more specialized process than melting plastic into fibre. Few suppliers in the world do it to a certifiable standard, and few Canadian manufacturers work with it. We're proud to be one of them.
Is a Recycled Down Duvet worth it?
If you want a duvet that's genuinely sustainable — natural, biodegradable, free of microplastics — and that can last decades with proper care, recycled down is one of the most responsible choices in bedding today. It's the comfort of down, without producing anything new.
