Featherbed vs. Mattress Topper vs. Mattress Pad
A featherbed is a type of mattress topper — one filled with feathers, down, or both. Here's how it compares to the other two things people mean when they say "topper."
| Featherbed | Foam or Latex Topper | Mattress Pad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A cotton-shelled layer filled with feathers, down, or both | A solid slab of memory foam or latex | A thin quilted layer with elasticated corners |
| What it changes | Adds plush softness and insulation on top | Changes firmness and contouring | Mostly protects; adds very little comfort |
| Where it sits | On the mattress, under the fitted sheet | On the mattress, under the fitted sheet | Fitted over the mattress like a sheet |
| Temperature | Breathable and airy, but insulating — sleeps warm | Memory foam can trap heat; latex is cooler | Minimal effect |
| Care | Not machine washable — spot clean or specialist dry clean | Not washable; removable covers only | Usually machine washable |
| Best for | A mattress that is too firm, or a hotel-style plush feel | Changing how supportive the mattress feels | Keeping a mattress clean |

Which Featherbed Is Right for You?
| If this sounds like you | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| My mattress is too firm and I wake up with sore shoulders and hips | Down Top Featherbed | The down top layer cushions pressure points; the feather base keeps you from bottoming out |
| I want the plush hotel-bed feel at home | Down Top Featherbed | Dual-layer down-over-feather is the construction hotels use for a pillow-top surface |
| My mattress is fine — I just want it a bit softer and warmer | Featherbed | Adds cushioned loft and insulation without changing how the mattress supports you |
| I'm outfitting a guest room or a second bed on a budget | Featherbed | Same Canadian construction and certifications, at the collection's entry price |
| My bed frame or mattress feels cold underneath | Either | Feathers insulate — a featherbed is the standard fix for a cold-sleeping mattress |
| My mattress sags in the middle | Neither | A featherbed adds softness, not structural support. A sagging mattress needs replacing |

Featherbed Questions, Answered
What is a featherbed?
A featherbed is a mattress topper filled with feathers, down, or a blend of the two, inside a tightly woven cotton shell. It goes on top of your mattress and under your fitted sheet, adding a plush layer between you and the mattress surface.
The names get confusing because there are so many of them. Featherbed, feather bed, feather mattress topper, down mattress topper and down topper all describe the same product. What separates them is what's inside: an all-feather fill gives a firmer, more supportive cushion, while down — the soft cluster from beneath a bird's outer feathers — is lighter and plusher. Our Down Top Featherbed uses both, with a white down top layer over a feather base, so you get softness where your body touches and support underneath it.
How to Use a Featherbed
Place the featherbed directly on your mattress and put your fitted sheet over top of it, so you're not sleeping on the featherbed shell itself. If your fitted sheet has shallow pockets, you may need a deeper-pocket sheet — a featherbed adds noticeable height to the bed. Our Royal Elite sheet sets are cut to accommodate it.
Before the first night, let the featherbed breathe for about 12 hours before putting the sheet on. This lets the fill loft up fully after being compressed in packaging. Give it a shake every week or so to keep the fill evenly distributed.
Does a featherbed go over or under the fitted sheet?
Under. The featherbed sits directly on the mattress, and the fitted sheet goes over top of it. Because a featherbed adds height to the bed, a deep-pocket fitted sheet works best.
What's the difference between a featherbed and a mattress topper?
A featherbed is a mattress topper — specifically, one filled with feathers or down. "Mattress topper" is the broader category, which also includes memory foam and latex. Featherbeds add plush softness; foam and latex toppers change how firm and supportive the mattress feels.
Can you machine wash a featherbed?
No. Royal Elite featherbeds should not be machine washed — domestic machines can't fully dry the fill, and trapped moisture causes clumping and odour. Spot clean spills with Zero® or Woolite®, use a specialist down and feather dry cleaner when needed, and air the featherbed outdoors away from direct sun for freshness.
Will a featherbed fix a sagging mattress?
No. A featherbed adds softness on top, not structural support underneath. It works beautifully on a mattress that is too firm or has lost its surface comfort, but if your mattress sags in the middle, that mattress needs replacing.
Are featherbeds hot to sleep on?
Feathers and down are breathable and allow good airflow, and our 233 thread count cotton shell breathes well. That said, a featherbed is an insulating layer by design, so it will make the bed feel warmer than a bare mattress. If you sleep very hot, that insulation may be more than you want.
Which is softer, the Down Top Featherbed or the Featherbed?
The Down Top Featherbed. Its white down top layer sits over a supportive feather base, so the surface you sleep on is plusher while the base still holds you up. The standard Featherbed uses all-feather fill, which gives a cushioned but firmer, more supportive feel.
Are Royal Elite featherbeds made in Canada?
Yes. Both are filled and finished in our own facility in Toronto. Royal Elite has been making down and feather bedding in Canada since 1994, and Maholi has sat on the board of the Down Association of Canada since 1995.
What sizes do Royal Elite featherbeds come in?
Twin, Double, Queen and King, in both the Down Top Featherbed and the Featherbed.
