Percale, Sateen or Bamboo: How to Choose

The weave matters more than the number on the label.

Sateen is woven so that more thread surface sits on the face of the fabric. That gives it a smooth, fluid hand and a soft sheen, and it drapes closely over your duvet. It holds a little more warmth than percale, which makes it the year-round choice for most sleepers. Our Bliss, Damask Stripe and Organic Cotton Sateen sets are sateen weaves.

Percale is a simple one-over-one weave. It feels crisp and cool, looks matte rather than lustrous, and lifts slightly away from the skin so air moves through it. If you sleep hot, or you love the feel of a freshly pressed shirt, percale is your weave. Our 100% Organic Cotton Percale set is finished with a peach treatment, so it stays crisp without feeling stiff on the first night.

Rayon from bamboo is a different material entirely, not a cotton weave. The fibre is smooth and dense, so it feels cool to the touch and drapes more fluidly than cotton. Our Bamboo Solid and Bamboo Stripe sets suit sleepers who run warm and prefer a silky finish over a crisp one.

Still deciding? If you overheat at night, take percale or bamboo. If you want the classic hotel bed, take sateen.

What's Included in Every Set

A Royal Elite duvet cover set is a complete set. Many bedding brands sell the duvet cover alone and charge separately for shams, which can add forty to fifty dollars to the real cost of dressing your bed.

Every Royal Elite set includes:

  • One duvet cover in your chosen size
  • One pillow sham with Twin
  • Two matching pillow shams with Double, Queen, King and Super King

The duvet insert is sold separately. A duvet cover is the washable outer layer that protects the duvet inside it — browse our Goose Down Duvets, Down Duvets and Wool and Silk Duvets to pair with your cover.

Duvet Cover Sizing

Match your duvet cover to your duvet insert, not to your mattress. A cover sized to the mattress will leave your duvet compressed at the corners.

Size Duvet Cover Shams Included Fits
Twin ~66" x 90" 1 Twin duvet
Double ~80" x 90" 2 Double / Full duvet
Queen ~90" x 92" 2 Queen duvet
King ~106" x 92" 2 King duvet
Super King ~115" x 104" 2 Organic Cotton Sateen and Percale only

Thread Count, Honestly

Thread count measures how many threads are woven into a square inch of fabric. It is a useful number, but it is not a quality score, and the four-figure counts advertised by some retailers are usually reached by counting multi-ply yarns more than once.

What actually determines how a duvet cover feels and how long it lasts is the fibre. Long-staple cotton — the combed Egyptian cotton in our Bliss and Damask Stripe sets — is spun from longer fibres, so the yarn is smoother, sheds less, and resists pilling far better than short-staple cotton at the same thread count.

Our range runs from 300 to 400 thread count. That is a deliberate range, not a compromise. At 300 thread count in a percale weave, the fabric breathes properly; pushing it higher would close the weave and defeat the point. At 400 thread count in a sateen weave, you get the smooth drape without the fabric becoming heavy or airless.

Certifications and Canadian Craftsmanship

Canadian Craftsmanship

Maholi has manufactured bedding in Toronto since 1994, and Royal Elite duvet covers are cut and sewn at our East York facility. Most premium bedding sold in Canada is woven and finished overseas. Ours is finished here.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

This certification applies across the collection. It certifies that every component of the finished textile — fabric, thread, dye — has been tested against a list of substances harmful to human health. This is the certification to look for if you have sensitive skin or you're buying for a child's room.

Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS certification applies to our 100% Organic Cotton Sateen and 100% Organic Cotton Percale sets. The Global Organic Textile Standard covers the entire chain, from organically grown non-GMO cotton through spinning, weaving, dyeing and sewing, and sets social criteria for the people doing the work. It is the strictest organic textile standard in use.

Duvet Cover Set Questions

What is the difference between a duvet cover and a comforter?

A comforter is a single finished piece — fill sealed inside a shell — designed to be used as it is. A duvet is the insert on its own, and a duvet cover is the removable, washable case that goes over it. The advantage of the duvet system is laundry: you wash the cover regularly and rarely need to clean the duvet itself. It also lets you change the look of your bed without replacing the duvet.

Do Royal Elite duvet cover sets include pillow shams?

Yes. Every set includes the duvet cover plus shams — one with Twin, and two with Double, Queen, King and Super King. The duvet insert is sold separately.

Is percale or sateen better if I sleep hot?

Percale. Its one-over-one weave sits slightly away from the skin and lets air pass through, so it feels crisp and cool. Sateen is smoother and drapes closer to the body, which holds a little more warmth. Our 100% Organic Cotton Percale set is the coolest cotton option in the collection; our bamboo sets are also a strong choice for warm sleepers, with a silkier hand than percale.

How does the duvet cover close?

Use this text to answer questions in as much detail as possible for your customers.

What thread count should I look for in a duvet cover?

Between 300 and 500 is the useful range for bedding. Below that the fabric can feel coarse; above it, the weave closes up and breathability suffers, and very high advertised counts are often inflated by counting multi-ply yarns more than once. Fibre quality matters more than the number — long-staple cotton at 400 thread count outperforms short-staple cotton at 1,000. Royal Elite duvet covers run from 300 to 400 thread count.

Are bamboo duvet covers cooling?

Rayon derived from bamboo is a smooth, dense fibre that feels cool against the skin and moves moisture away from the body, which is why warm sleepers tend to prefer it. It is a regenerated fibre, made by processing bamboo cellulose into yarn — not a natural fibre in the way cotton or linen is. Our Bamboo Solid and Bamboo Stripe sets are both OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified and made in Canada.

Where are Royal Elite duvet cover sets made?

They are cut and sewn at Maholi's East York facility in Toronto. Maholi has manufactured bedding in Canada since 1994 and has served on the board of the Down Association of Canada since 1995.

How do I wash a Royal Elite duvet cover?

Turn the cover inside out and machine wash with similar colours in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry on low. Do not dry clean. If ironing is needed, use a cool setting on the reverse side. For spills, spot clean with a gentle detergent such as Zero or Woolite.
