Where are Royal Elite sheets and duvet covers made?

They are cut and sewn at Maholi's East York facility in Toronto, where the company has manufactured bedding since 1994. That applies to the Damask Stripe, 100% Organic Cotton Sateen, 100% Organic Cotton Percale, Bamboo Solid and Bamboo Stripe sets in both sheet sets and duvet cover sets. The Bliss sets and all three Embroidered duvet cover sets are imported, and each is labelled as such on its product page. We say cut and sewn in Canada rather than made in Canada because the fabric itself is woven by mills outside Canada — the cutting, sewing and finishing happen here. Maholi has also served on the board of the Down Association of Canada since 1995.

What is the difference between percale and sateen?

They are two ways of weaving the same cotton, and the weave changes how the fabric feels far more than the thread count does. Percale is a simple one-over-one weave. It feels crisp and cool, looks matte rather than lustrous, and lifts slightly away from the skin so air moves through it — the feel of a freshly pressed shirt. Sateen is woven so more thread surface sits on the face of the fabric, which gives it a smooth hand, a soft sheen and a closer drape over the body. Sateen holds marginally more warmth than percale, which is why it suits most sleepers year-round while percale suits people who overheat.

Start with 100% Organic Cotton Percale. Its one-over-one weave sits slightly off the skin and lets air pass through, and at 300 thread count the fabric breathes properly rather than closing up. It is finished with a peach treatment so it stays crisp without feeling stiff the first night. If you run warm but dislike the crisp, papery hand of percale, take Bamboo Solid or Bamboo Stripe instead — rayon from bamboo is a smooth, dense fibre that feels cool on contact and moves moisture away from the body, with a fluid drape closer to silk than to cotton. Avoid the 400 thread count sateens if overheating is your main complaint.

What is included in a duvet cover set?

Every Royal Elite duvet cover set includes the duvet cover plus matching pillow shams — one sham with Twin, and two with Double, Queen, King and Super King. The duvet insert itself is sold separately. This matters when you are comparing prices: many bedding brands sell the duvet cover on its own and charge another forty to fifty dollars for the shams, so a cover that looks cheaper on the listing can cost more once your bed is actually dressed.

Are bamboo sheets actually cooling?

Rayon derived from bamboo is a smooth, dense fibre that feels cool against the skin on contact and wicks moisture away from the body, which is why warm sleepers consistently prefer it. It is worth being precise about what it is: rayon from bamboo is a regenerated fibre, made by chemically processing bamboo cellulose into yarn. It is not a natural fibre in the way that cotton, linen or wool are, and we do not describe it as one. Our Bamboo Solid and Bamboo Stripe sets are 310 thread count, cut and sewn in Canada, and certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.

Does thread count determine sheet quality?

No. Thread count measures how many threads are woven into a square inch of fabric. It is useful information, but it is not a quality score, and the four-figure counts advertised by some retailers are usually reached by counting multi-ply yarns more than once. What actually determines how sheets feel and how long they last is the fibre. Long-staple cotton — the combed Egyptian cotton in our Bliss and Damask Stripe sets — is spun from longer fibres, so the yarn is smoother, sheds less and resists pilling far better than short-staple cotton at the same count. Between 300 and 500 is the genuinely useful range. Ours run 300 to 400.

What is the difference between a duvet cover and a comforter?

A comforter is a single finished piece — fill sealed permanently inside a shell — designed to be used as it is. A duvet is that insert on its own, and a duvet cover is the removable, washable case that goes over it. The practical advantage of the duvet system is laundry: you wash the cover regularly and rarely need to clean the duvet itself, which is difficult and slow to dry at home. It also lets you change the look of your bed seasonally without replacing the duvet underneath.

Can I mix fabrics between my sheets and my duvet cover?

Yes, and there is a good reason to. Sheets touch you all night; a duvet cover mostly sits above you. If you overheat but like the look of a sateen bed, a percale or bamboo fitted sheet underneath a sateen duvet cover gives you the cooler surface where it counts and the hotel drape where it shows. Couples who sleep at different temperatures often split the difference this way. All six of our fabrics are offered in both sheet sets and duvet cover sets, and our colours are built to sit together, so mixing weaves does not mean mismatched tones.

An embroidered duvet cover carries a design stitched directly into the fabric with thread, rather than printed onto the surface with dye. The practical difference shows up over time: a print sits on top of the weave and will gradually fade, crack or soften with repeated washing, while embroidery is structural — it is part of the textile, so it holds its definition and its colour. The Global Organic Textile Standard is the strictest organic textile certification in use, and it applies to our 100% Organic Cotton Sateen and 100% Organic Cotton Percale sets in both sheet sets and duvet cover sets. GOTS covers the entire chain rather than just the raw material: organically grown non-GMO cotton, then spinning, weaving, dyeing and sewing, with restrictions on the chemical inputs allowed at every stage. It also sets social criteria for the people doing the work. This is the distinction between cotton that was grown organically and a finished textile that is organic all the way through.

What does OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 mean?

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certifies that every component of a finished textile — the fabric, the sewing thread, the dyes, the labels — has been laboratory tested against a list of substances known to be harmful to human health. It is a safety certification rather than an environmental or organic one, and the two are often confused. It applies across our entire sheets and duvet cover collection, imported sets included. This is the certification to look for if you have sensitive skin, eczema, or you are buying bedding for a child's room.

How do I wash Royal Elite sheets and duvet covers?

Turn the item inside out and machine wash with similar colours in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry on low. Do not dry clean. If ironing is needed, use a cool setting on the reverse side. For spills, spot clean with a gentle detergent such as Zero or Woolite. Two things shorten the life of good bedding more than anything else: hot water, which weakens cotton fibres over repeated cycles, and overloading the machine, which prevents the fabric from moving freely and creates abrasion. Washing sheets weekly on cold does less damage than washing them fortnightly on hot.

How do I choose the right duvet cover size?

Match the duvet cover to your duvet insert, not to your mattress. This is the most common sizing mistake and it produces a visibly compressed, lumpy bed, because a cover sized to the mattress squeezes the duvet at the corners and stops the fill from lofting. Our covers run approximately 66 by 90 inches in Twin, 80 by 90 in Double, 90 by 92 in Queen, 106 by 92 in King and 115 by 104 in Super King. Super King is available in Organic Cotton Sateen and Organic Cotton Percale. If your existing duvet sits between two sizes, take the larger cover.
